As part of the MSc Science and Health Communication course at the University of Manchester, all students undertake an independent project, either self-guided (a Creative Project) or alongside an organisation who help direct the project (a Mentored Project).
For my mentored project, I worked alongside two education lecturers from the University of Manchester - Amanda and Sara, helping them to design a learning trail for children around a park in Manchester. Here's a quick presentation I had made to update my course mates on what the plan for my project was.
In the end, I worked alongside Amanda and Sara to determine the 10 stations of the trail, and then connected those stations with a theme, KS2 Curriculum point and questions. I drafted the scripts for three of those stations, which could then be used as models for them to complete the trail. I also got to share my understanding of science communication and science education literature with Amanda and Sara, and ensure the project was built on solid foundations of research.
I haven't had any updates on the trail yet, but I really enjoyed this project, which allowed me to improve my communication skills for young people, develop my understanding of science education research. This was even the starting point for my research project.
